View Larger Image   Witherby Socket Beveled Chisel 1.25 inch   Description: This is a nice old 19th century heavy duty 1.25" (1-1/4") wide chisel marked "T. H. WITHERBY WARRENTED" on the steel. It is 13.3" long overall. It has been used but is in good working order. The holes in the socket appear to be original or at least done many years ago, they were most likely their to pin the handle in the socket in place, to keep the handle from coming off, but as you may know, no real need for that, as a well fit socket handle stays on very well once fit correctly, as in this case. This chisel is in very nice working order, the cutting edge area is in very good shape, sharp and ready to use. pme slightly darkened area near the cutting edge, be is not a chip. No rust, no pitting, no cracks, straight, not bent, flat on the bottom. We note a few dings on the socket, considered minor, doesn't effect use. The handle is in good condition and appears to be ash w/steel cap end, very solid, clean, fits good. Note: Witherby was bought out by Winsted Edge Tool Works in the early 1870's, but Winsted continued to use the Witherby name on the chisels they manufactured. Both names are well known quality toolmakers!
