View Larger Image   Antique Gouge Chisel Fish Tail Bent Front Gouge Chisel 1.6 inch   Description: This is a very nice early 1900's era gouge carving chisel that is not marked by the maker, in fact it appears to have been hand make by an accomplished metal worker. A very nice medium/full sweep, short bent, fish tail spade gouge chisel with a medium/full arc in the width of the chisel cutting edge area giving the user a better cutting position, sometime call a curved front spoon carving gouge chisel. In the old Addis catalog, (if this was an Addis chisel) it would be a No. 27 gouge arc or sweep, combine with about the medium bent front shape. The steel alone measures 8" long from the sharp cutting edge (out-channel sharpened) to the handle. The chisel overall length is 13.25". The handle is the milti-sided type, has no cracks, one small end area chip off, nice looking, very solid, well attached, has some past owner's intials stamped on the handle in two places. The steel is of good quality, appears to have been heat treated, and has a nice cutting edge on it also. I bought it from the same estate that included several Addis and other top quality English chisels as well. Although this one is not as highly polished as the Addis chisels, it is smooth and well formed. A top quality chisel that has lasted many years!
