View Larger Image   Douglass Firmer Chisel Tanged 2 inch Antique   Description: This is a nice antique (late 1800's), top quality steel tanged firmer chisel. Tanged refers to the tang that projects from the chisel steel into the hardwood handle to secure it in place. This chisel is 12.5" long overall. We also note that this one is actually 1.94" wide at the cutting edge, so about 1/16" less than 2" wide. This is because the chisels of this type in the 19th century had a width relief angle on both side of the chisel, so as stock is sharpened away, the chisel become more narrow, this angle continues all the way back to the handle area. The steel has the old "D.M. CO." logo on the steel, this was one of the stamp marked used by Douglass Mfg. Co. Seymour Conn. U.S.A., a well known 19th century edge tool maker. The steel has some very minor pitting starting at least 1/4" back from the cutting edge. It is very sharp, the cutting edge is straight and has the proper relief angle on it. The handle is leather capped ash hardwood with a brass ferrule at the tang. We note a good old repair on a crack in the handle, that extended into the brass also. We did test it under strain, and the glue repair held fast. Very study.
