View Larger Image   Starrett Inside Spring Calipers No. 74 Fay Pat. 1885   Description: This is a very good antique No. 74 heavy duty upper leg, Fay Pattern inside calipers, with the spring nut type fine adjustment nut. This one is marked "PATENTED JUNE 2.1885" on one side of the leg, and one the other side marked "The L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL MASS. U.S.A.". It is also marked "PAT. JAN.30,1900" on the spring nut. The spring nut can be quickly released from the rod threads for fast set up and gauge adjusting, yet still works great on the threads when presure is applied by the spring on the calipers. This caliper is in good++ condition overall with a past owner's name etched on one leg, very little wear noted, no rust, some tiny areas of very minor pitting, none effecting use. A nice example of a early patent spring caliper with a very early spring nut or quick release nut also! After about 1930 Starrett stopped offering the spring nut on this model, most likely because it was being fazed out, and other model had this feature.
