View Larger Image   Ives Brace Auger Bit Set of 13 Mephisto Extras   Description: This is a very nice older set of hand brace auger bits all marked "MEPHISTO W.A. IVES MFG. CO." on most of them, and the come in the original tool roll that is also marked "W.A. IVES MFG. CO." the writing on the roll is fairly clear to read on the roll, that is original canvas type rolls with another layer of a heavy cotton duck type material. The additional material was added because of some small holes in the original canvas type material, as useable repair. W.A. Ives was in business from about 1868-1917, and had over ten U.S.A. Patents on drilling type tools. These bits are a rapid travel, course threaded lead screw, with the single spur and single cutting edge. This was a popular style auger bit in it's day, particularly for construction work. The drill bits are in good to very good useable condition, clean, not rusty, bent or broken, all appear sharp, with good lead screws, and tapered ends on each to fit into your brace chuck. There is some that have minor pitting, but none should effect the use of the bits as the pitting is not in the cutting edge or spur area, but mostly on the shanks. All have the tapered type end for use in most hand braces. The sizes are 4/16 to 16/16 by 16ths increments, a total of 13 bit, and 13 pockets in the roll to match. There is two bits that are of another type, and maker, No. 14/16 and 16/16 size, both of these are good Irwin type double spur auger bits. We did add two extra bits that are Ives, one is 16/16ths, the other is 18/16ths, both are about 1 inch shorter than the others, but are in very good shape. The roll is medium brown canvas and is in good shape, some minor shop stains, missing the closure strap. The stitching on the roll is holding for the most part, some tiny, or small holes worn thought, but does the job of protecting the auger bits, and keeping them organized. A good quality set of bits, that have become rare these days!
