View Larger Image   North Brothers Yankee Reciprocating Drill No. 50   Description: This is a rare spiral reciprocating drill marked "YANKEE NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. USA. PAT. MAR. 15.10" on the chuck and "YANKEE NO. 50 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. USA. PAT. NOV. 2-97 MAR. 27-02" on the drill cylinder that has the ratchet mechanism in it. The drive cylinder allows the reciprocating movement of the chuck to constantly be clockwise for drilling. It works very smoothly as you move it up and down the spiral shaft, it is continuously moving clockwise. The chuck is a standard three jaw type with a 1/4" capacity and can be used with today's standard straight shank drills. It is in very good working order with good strong jaw spring that retract as the threaded chuck sleeve is turned to the opened postion. We note that this particular drill has no way to lock the cylinder in place while changing drills, so I held the spiral shaft while opening and closing the drill chuck, this works just fine. I believe later models had a lock switch on the drive cylinder, but this one doesn't. The end/head handle is made of rosewood with a steel flange attaching it to the main shaft. The flange and the rosewood is very nice, no cracks, some tiny specks of missing nickel plating, otherwise clean, no rust. There is not rust or pitting on the exterior, very clean. This is a favorite tool design among woodworkers because of the simple smooth motion of this tool for drilling/reaming small holes.
