View Larger Image   Blood Broad Ax Axe Head Ballston N.Y. I. Blood   Description: This is a rare early broad axe/ax head marked "I. BLOOD ENGLISH BALSTON N.Y. CAST STEEL" in stamped lettering, as shown in the picture. It is an offset axe and appears that it can be set up for right or left offset. It is in very good condition, no cracks, some minor casting flaws, a good cutting edge, minimal wear overall. We note that the cutting edge has not been sharpened in many years, with some minor pitting noted evenly on about all surfaces of this axe. If one intended to use it, a handle would have to be fitted for it, and sharpening it. It is sharp enough to cut now, but need the minor pitting to be removed for best results. The cutting edge is 11" wide and the head measures 8" in the other direction. Isaiah Blood was well know for top quality edge tools from the 1860's to 1890's era, making axes, Scythes, and even battle axes during the civil war era. This company was in business long enough to have attracted quite a bit of interest by collectors and historians, that we note a book was written about the company. We believe that this axe is marked ENGLISH having to do with the owner's heritage, his father was from England. The factory this axe was made in was located in a town called Bloodville, but was apparently know as Ballston NY also, since that is the name on this axe head. Today, it is known a Ballston Spa NY. There is also plenty of information available on internet search sites.
