View Larger Image   Stanley No. 4 Smooth Plane Made in England   Description: Offering this very nice clean smooth plane, that appears to be unused! It is marked "STANLEY MADE IN ENGLAND 20 DEGREE ANGLE FOR GRINDING" on the cutter blade, also marked "STANLEY" on the nickel plated cap cover, and "012-004 MADE IN ENGLAND" on the bed behind the frog. This plane has about 99% original black Japanning intact, a good sharp 2 inch wide cutter - about 100% intact, no cracks or chips, good clean bare metal, only minor darkened spot or stains here and there. The rosewood tote and knob are actually molded industrial plastic, but one has to look closely to tell the difference from rosewood. Both handle and knob are good++ no cracks or chips, a few minor scuffs, very nice, solid. In comparison to the early 1900's era Stanley planes, all the qualities of those old castings are incorporated in the quality of this plane, the major different is the plastic handles, which in my experience hold up as well as the rosewood does, but the plastic is much less prone to chips or crack in comparison. The plane also has the frog adjustment screw, lateral and depth cutter adjustments, and the same quality of surface ground bare metal surfaces of any era Stanley planes I have seen from the past.
