Original June 1822 handwritten blacksmith account associated with Enoch Sargent, a documented early blacksmith of Sutton, New Hampshire.
This fascinating early American trade document is an itemized account showing numerous individual charges for blacksmithing and repair work. Entries include work involving shoeing, sharpening, mending and repairing various iron implements and other period blacksmith services, with the individual charges recorded along the right side of the sheet.
The account appears to have been prepared for Benj. (Benjamin) Newman, with the heading indicating his account with Enoch Sargent. The document is signed or inscribed “Enoch Sargent” prominently near the bottom.
Historical records identify Enoch Sargent as a blacksmith who lived and worked in the South Village of Sutton, New Hampshire, making this an interesting surviving piece of early 19th-century New Hampshire trade and occupational history.
Dated June 1822, the document provides a remarkable look at the everyday work and pricing of an American blacksmith more than 200 years ago.
The document shows substantial age-related wear, including staining, fold lines, small holes, losses and significant edge loss along the right side. Despite the condition issues, much of the handwritten account remains legible, including the 1822 date and Enoch Sargent name.
