1892 Antique English Mortgage Indenture Vellum Document Trowbridge Wiltshire John Crook William John Mann Newtown Property Wax Seal

Offered here is a large and impressive original antique English legal indenture on vellum, dated 19th August 1892, measuring approximately 21 x 26 inches.
This is a mortgage indenture executed between John Crook of Trowbridge in the County of Wilts, Baker, as mortgagor, and William John Mann of Trowbridge, Gentleman, as mortgagee. The document conveys four messuages or dwellinghouses then under construction, together with plots and parcels of land situated in the Town and Parish of Trowbridge, in the area known as Newtown, being part of the Bythesea Estate, with a frontage of approximately 65 feet to a road called Newtown. The properties are numbered 44, 45, 46, and 47 on the plan referenced therein, drawn in the margin of an Indenture of Conveyance dated the 16th of June, made between Samuel Francis Bythesea and John Crook.
The mortgage secures the sum of £200 Sterling (Two Hundred Pounds) with interest at the rate of five pounds per centum per annum, payable by equal half-yearly payments on the 17th day of June and the 17th day of December. The document contains standard Victorian mortgage provisions including covenants to repay, provisions under the Conveyancing and Law of Property Act, and clauses addressing future advances and the rights of any solicitor acting as holder of the security.
The indenture is penned in fine Victorian copperplate and legal hand on high-quality vellum with red ruling borders throughout. The document bears two original red wax seals on green wafer backing and is signed by John Crook. A Ten Shillings revenue stamp (dated 1892) is affixed to the upper right corner. The document is endorsed on the dorse: “Mr. John Crook to Mr. W. J. Mann — Mortgage of four houses and land at Newtown Trowbridge, Wilts to secure £200 and future advances”, with a solicitor’s endorsement reading Mason & Rodway, Trowbridge.
Condition: Very good for age. Some fold lines consistent with original storage. Vellum clean and legible throughout.
