Original 1921 Swedish family photo album containing 64 mounted photographs documenting family life, travel, work, military service, social gatherings, and outdoor activities in Sweden. The album measures approximately 9.25 x 11 inches and retains its original dark textured covers and cord-style binding. The inside front cover has a handwritten inscription dated 1921, apparently presenting the album as a remembrance or memento and including the name Elsa.
The 64 original photographs offer an unusually varied visual record. Several of the strongest images show men working or posing inside an industrial machine shop, including excellent close views of machinists alongside large lathes and other period machinery. These occupational photographs provide particularly appealing subject matter for collectors of early industrial, machinist, factory, and labor photography.
Also included are numerous military-related photographs, showing individual uniformed men as well as pairs and groups in uniform. Other subjects throughout the album include men and women in period dress, couples, families, children, picnics, outdoor gatherings, boats, lakes, rural homes, wooded landscapes, formal dinners and celebrations, recreational outings, and large groups.
Several photographs have visible handwritten identifications. One is clearly marked “Skansen,” identifying the famous open-air museum and cultural site in Stockholm, Sweden. Other photographs appear to have Swedish place or event captions, including one dated 1921, although some handwriting is difficult to read with certainty.
Taken together, the album presents a fascinating early-20th-century Swedish social history archive, combining everyday family snapshots with much less common occupational and military imagery. The combination of identifiable Swedish subject matter, dated provenance, industrial machinery, uniforms, outdoor recreation, and family life gives the album considerably more historical interest than a typical unidentified snapshot album.
The photographs are predominantly small-format black-and-white snapshots mounted on dark album pages. There are 64 photographs total. They appear to date primarily from the late 1910s through the early 1920s, with the album itself specifically dated 1921.
