Here’s the history behind the photograph: Jack McGurn was arrested in August 1933 under Illinois's Criminal Reputation Law (a newly amended vagrancy act) because police recognized him as a notorious mobster and former Al Capone associate while he was participating in the Western Open golf tournament. While playing at the Olympia Fields Country Club under the name Vincent Gebhardi (his real first name and a variation of his surname), a Chicago police detective spotted him on the pairing sheet. McGurn asked detectives to let him finish the round of golf, and they obliged, allowing reported to take photos of him as he golfed. McGurn was arrested after he finished the round. He was later acquitted.
