1946 No 3 Works Company Constr Corps Ireland Gaelic Football Tournament Medal.This rare medal is from an athletic and military sports event that took place in Ireland immediately following the Second World War. The Number 3 Works Company was a specific military unit within the Construction Corps (Cór Saothair) of the Irish Defence Forces. The Construction Corps was an unarmed unit established during "The Emergency" (Irish neutrality during World War II) to carry out vital public works, such as turf-cutting, bog drainage, and building military defenses. It also heavily focused on basic education and vocational training for young recruits. Because the Construction Corps camps housed hundreds of young, able-bodied men, military leadership organized recreational and athletic competitions to keep the troops occupied, fit, and entertained. The "Inter-Unit Gaelic Fall League 1945/46" was a Gaelic football tournament where the various battalions and companies of the Construction Corps competed against one another. Following the end of the war in 1945, these military sports leagues became highly popular as demobilization approached and troops enjoyed increased peacetime recreational activities.The back of this vintage medal reads, "No 3 Works Company Constr Corps Inter Unit Gaelic F'ball League 1945-46 Won by." The medal measures 1.25" long by 1" wide.
