9LB, 12". This specimen is a combination of Amethyst and Chalcedony (Agate), specifically known as Amethyst Stalactite or Amethyst Flower.
Key Features:
Amethyst Matrix: The purple crystalline areas are quartz colored by irradiation and iron impurities.
Stalactite Eyes: The circular, banded grey sections are cross-sections of stalactite formations. These "eyes" are formed when chalcedony layers grow around a central core (often a tiny crystal or hollow tube) before the amethyst crystals eventually grow over them.
Banding: The concentric circles within the grey areas show the rhythmic deposition of silica, which is characteristic of agate.
This type of formation is most commonly sourced from the basalt deposits in Artigas, Uruguay, or Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where large geodes contain these unique stalactitic growths.
