Abingdon Cookie Jar With Lid, Vintage Jack in the Box/ABC #119 - USA For Sale

This whimsical and very unique cookie jar was made by Abingdon Pottery andis a vintage collectible. Pastel pink, yellow, green, and blue colorsdecorate the clown/jack-in-the-box lid, as well as the ABC lettering on oneside and the word COOKIES on the other. The jar measures 5½\" x 5½\" x 5½\" square,is about 11¼\" tall with the lid on, and weighs 3 lb. 10 oz. The lid is in excellentcondition with no marks or cracks. The bottom piece has some age spots that you can see in the photos, and one small hairline crack around therim that you can see circled in the last photo. The bottom piece still has theoriginal gold Abingdon sticker on it (also shown in the photos).

Abingdon Pottery is a highly collectible line of artwareproduced between 1934 and 1950 by the Abingdon Sanitary Manufacturing Companyin Knoxville, Illinois. The company originally made vitreous china sanitary andplumbing fixtures, such as toilets and sinks. Vitreous china is aspecialized enamel glaze applied to porcelain plumbing fixtures to enhancethe density, toughness, and shine. During the Depression, when newhomes weren’t being built, Abingdon shifted production to small art pieces, whilestill using the same high-quality, \"industrial strength\" vitreous chinaglaze they applied to their porcelain plumbing fixtures. Unlike standard claypottery, Abingdon’s vitreous china-glazed porcelain made their art pieces heavier, more durable, and more resistant to chipping and hairline cracks.
