The box is constructed in a bookbinding style and covered in decorative marbled book paper, with a lined interior and a metal ring pull on the front. The interior bears the original Johnson & Watson, Dayton, Ohio imprint.
The exact original use is unknown, but the size and construction suggest it was made for filing, indexing, or storing papers/cards/records - possibly for court documents.

One piece of edging is loose and hanging.Original antique condition with considerable age-related wear. The marbled paper covering has areas of loss, scuffing and lifting, particularly around the corners and edges. Metal ring pull is present.
