This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is approximately 7 x 5 inches (180x130mm).
It shows a large French battleship moored in a harbour, viewed from the stern. The ship features multiple large gun turrets, a central funnel, and tall masts, with a French tricolour flag flying from the stern flagpole. Several smaller boats with lateen sails are clustered near the port side of the battleship, and a figure stands on a small pier or boat to the right.
The reverse has handwritten pencil text in French reading \"La Liberté: vue d\'avant / vue arrière ou l\'explosion s\'est produite / a Toulon\", with some words crossed out. There is a purple stamp for \"AGENCE PARISIENNE DE REPORTAGE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE CH. BIARD & Cie 21, Rue Bergère, PARIS Téléphone 269-39\". A large, irregular brown stain is visible on the left side of the reverse.
