This is a Japanese Buddhist hanging scroll (Kakejiku) featuring Tendai Daishi Zhiyi, also known as Tiantai Zhiyi, one of the most influential Buddhist masters in East Asian Buddhism.
Tendai Daishi Zhiyi (538–597) was a Chinese Buddhist monk regarded as the principal founder and great systematizer of the Tiantai school of Buddhism. His teachings placed particular importance on the Lotus Sutra and greatly influenced the development of Japanese Tendai Buddhism.
He is traditionally respected for his profound teachings on meditation, Buddhist philosophy, and the idea that all beings possess the potential to attain enlightenment.
