This unusual constructed image combines a stark Western/desert landscape with deliberately unexpected elements: children driving vintage pedal cars across the terrain, airborne toy-like airplanes, and large running antelope/kudu-like animals. Utility poles recede dramatically toward the horizon, creating a strong underlying perspective through the otherwise fantastic scene. Repetition, changes of scale, and the juxtaposition of childhood imagery, machines, wildlife, and an expansive landscape give the work a distinctly surreal and dreamlike character.
The photograph is unframed and approximately 11 x 14 inches. It is identified in pencil along the lower verso “Linda Mann 81.” Additional artist handwritten working/darkroom notations appear on the reverse, apparently recording exposure/printing information.
This photograph was retained in the personal collection of Prof. Neal M. White, who taught photography at San Francisco State University, and is understood to have originated as student work from that context. It offers a particularly appealing example of the experimental and constructed photographic work being produced in an art-school environment in the early 1980s.
