Prehistoric Southwestern pottery wares primarily come from Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Mogollon, Hohokam, and related traditions (including Salado and early Casas Grandes influences) in the U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico, dating roughly from around AD 200–1500. These were hand-built (coil-and-scrape technique, no potter’s wheel), fired in open or simple pits, and used for cooking, storage, serving, and ceremonial purposes. Archaeologists classify them by “wares” (broad technological and stylistic groups defined by clay, temper, surface treatment, and paint) and more specific “types” within those wares. Utility wares were often plain, textured, or corrugated gray/brown; decorated wares featured slips and painted designs (black-on-white, black-on-red, polychrome, red-on-buff, etc.).
