RARE SERBIAN CABINET PHOTO : TRADITIONAL COSTUME : ZAJECAR STUDIO : CIRCA 1900 For Sale

This elegant late-19th or very early-20th century cabinet card features a formally posed couple from Zaječar, a historic town in eastern Serbia, near the Bulgarian border. The image captures a striking and dignified pair: the woman stands poised in traditional Serbian attire, including a dark embroidered jacket, lace blouse, and what appears to be a bridal or festive headpiece. She holds a beautiful round feathered fan, adding to the ceremonial feel of the portrait. Beside her, a young gentleman stands confidently in a dark suit with a cravat, exuding stately charm and pride. The card is richly printed on heavy mount board, with ornate studio details both front and back. The reverse features decorative typography, floral scrollwork, and bilingual printing (Serbian Cyrillic and German), reflecting the multicultural influences of the region during the Austro-Hungarian era. This cabinet card was produced by the photographic studio L. Đorđević & S. Mihailović in Zaječar — one of the culturally important cities of the Kingdom of Serbia. Cards from Zaječar are scarce, and studio-identified examples with decorative backs and traditional dress are especially desirable. The printer mark reveals that the mount was printed by Bernhaard Nachtl (Vienna, Austria). In regard to condition, there is light foxing on mount, scattered age spotting, and corner wear consistent with age. The image remains sharp and expressive, with excellent tonal depth (see scans). This is a beautiful cabinet card survivor showcasing Serbian costume, portrait tradition, and provincial studio craftsmanship.
