Renowned Abolitionist Frederick Douglass Signs Deed For Washington Land:
$995.00

FREDERICK DOUGLASS (1818 – 1895) was arguably the most important abolitionist in America. After escaping slavery in Maryland in 1838, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York and gained fame for his oratory and anti-slavery incisive writings. He became the first African American nominated for vice president of the United states, as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket. He also actively supported women’s suffrage and held several public offices, including Recorder of Deeds in Washington, DC, an example of which is offered here.

8 ½ x 14, indenture, January 10th, 1884, between William King and Robert O. Holtzman of the District of Columbia, trustees, under a certain deed of trust from Robert G. Blaine and his wife, Rebecca A. Blaine. Catherine R, Reynolds was the present holder of the land in the deed of trustee. Also signed by Frederick W. Bratt as Notary Public. Douglass has signed on the verso as Recorder.

Light soiling and toning. One small edge break to a fold with a couple of holes in the fold, affecting nothing.
