Savannah GAThe Brinson Railway was incorporated in Georgia on May 10, 1906, for 99 years andwas controlled by George M. Brinson through ownership of a majority of the capital stock. The line between Savannah and Springfield, GA, 24.3 miles, was completed and opened for traffic on May 27, 1907. On February 18, 1909, the Brinson Railway purchased the assets of the Savannah Valley Railroad, extending from Egypt, GA in a northerly
direction to Millhaven, GA, approximately 38 miles, and the line was consolidated with the Brinson Railway on July 1, 1909.The connecting link between Springfield and Newington, 19 miles, was completed on August 18, 1909, making the distance from Savannah to Millhaven, 72.0 miles. On January 20, 1911, an additional 5.8 miles of line were completed between Millhaven and Sardis, GA; 18.5 miles, between Sardis and Waynesboro, on August 20, 1911; and 12.8 miles, between Waynesboro and St. Clair, during April 1913. The total length of road purchased and constructed was 120.84 miles, of which 10 miles, between Egypt and Newington, was abandoned in 1913, leaving 110.839 miles of road owned and operated.On March 26, 1914, the name of the Brinson Railway was changed to the Savannah & Northwestern Railway. On April 1, 1914, the Savannah & Northwestern entered into to a contract with the Great Eastern Lumber Company and the Savannah Union Railroad & Terminal Company to buy a line of road extending from Newtonville to Port Wentworth, GA, 2.44 miles. The deed to this property was delivered on December 13, 1916.
The Savannah & Atlanta Railway was incorporated in Georgia on December 8, 1915, to build a connecting link between the Georgia Railroad and the Savannah & Northwestern Railway. Its completions made a direct and by 28 miles the shortest route between Atlanta and Savannah. This line allowed the Georgia Railroad to have its only entrance to Savannah. The road was completed in August 1916 and was operated by the Savannah & Northwestern Railway under a traffic agreement.
