Maker: L. & I. J. White (founded in 1837 by Leonard and Ichabod J. White) was one of America’s premier 19th- and early 20th-century edge-tool manufacturers, famed for axes, adzes, slicks, cooperage tools, and bark spuds.

The Tool: A bark spud (or barking/peeling spud) was used in logging, timber framing, and hemlock/oak harvesting for leather tanneries. The tool consists of a shallow curved or spoon-like iron/steel blade tapering into the socket shown in the photo, where a long wooden handle was driven in and secured.

Marking: On their heavy forged logging and timber tools, the raised or stamped WHITE (often flanked by bracket or parenthesis marks) was standard maker identification on the socket neck.
