This is a hand-glazed ceramic art tile by Gila Pottery, made by Bob and Charmion McKusick and distributed through Desert House Crafts of Tucson, Arizona. The tile depicts a Gambel\'s quail family — an adult with its distinctive curved head plume leading two chicks — rendered in raised, hand-applied glaze against a turquoise background with incised desert grass accents. Measures 5.75\" square and 3/8\" thick.
Condition
The glaze shows good gloss and coverage with no chips or cracks visible along the edges or face.
About the Maker
Gila Pottery was the working name of Bob and Charmion McKusick, ceramic artists based in Globe, Arizona, whose hand-glazed tiles — often depicting Southwestern wildlife and Native American motifs — were sold through Desert House Crafts, a Tucson shop run by Bebe and Dan Lotz. Their pieces used individually hand-applied glaze colors and are collected today as mid-century Southwestern folk art.
