Rare cloth and basketry purse. The faded blue blue cotton top has been sewn onto a round Wabanaki basket.... the basket has 2 large thin wrapped ring handles. There is a crocheted drawstring at top of cloth to close this purse. Basket in excellent condition, cloth is faded with no holes but see description of condition above. (To display you could stuff the basket & cloth with tissue paper to make cloth stand upright more neatly... not \"stuffed\" in photos
While it is the sewn on cloth that makes this so unusual, if one wished - one could easily cut cloth off at rim (stitched to rim about 1 stitch per inch). You would then have nice round basket with lovely hoop handles.
Basket is 8\" diameter at top of basket and 2.75\" high to top of basket rim. Hoop handles are 2\" in diameter and 1/8\" wide.The cloth \"bag\" rises 6\" above the basket rim.
Basket is made ofbrown ash splints, traditional material of Maine and Eastern Canadian Indian (Wabanaki) basketmakers.
There are 5 tribes in the Wabanaki confederacy, the Abenaki, Maliseet, Mi\'kmaq, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot. - These tribes are in what is now Eastern Canada, Maine and Vermont (Abenaki) ..... Of these all made brown ash baskets similar to this in the late 1800\'s-1920\'s. This shape/size basket is not commonly made today.
