Offered is an exceptional matched pair of antique Austrian Vienna cold-painted bronze woodcocks, both signed J. Csadek, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1890–1915).
Finding a true matched pair by the same sculptor is increasingly difficult. These finely modeled birds display outstanding anatomical accuracy, individually hand-chased feather detail, beautifully sculpted legs and beaks, and retain their original hand-applied cold-painted finish. Both birds feature original glass eyes, adding remarkable realism and character.
Research indicates these bronzes are the work of J. Csadek, a highly regarded Vienna bronze sculptor whose work is sought after by collectors of Austrian cold-painted bronzes. Their lifelike posture and exceptional craftsmanship exemplify the quality that made Vienna the world center for bronze animal sculpture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
