DESCRIPTION
Outstanding antique collection of 19th-century European royalty, military leaders, generals, statesmen and other prominent figures, primarily dating from the 1860s–1870s era. The group consists of original carte-de-visite (CDV) photographs and photographic portrait cards, with a particularly strong concentration of Prussian/German royalty and military figures associated with the era of German unification and the Franco-Prussian War.
Identified subjects visible within the collection include Otto von Bismarck, Helmuth von Moltke, Albrecht von Roon, von Steinmetz, von Bittenfeld, Friedrich Wilhelm Crown Prince of Prussia, Prince Friedrich Carl of Prussia, Princess Maria of Prussia, Princess Frederick William of Prussia, Napoleon III, the Prince Imperial of France, Pope Pius IX, the King of Belgium, King of Holland, King of Saxony, Duke of Brunswick, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and numerous additional Prussian generals, European princes, princesses, monarchs, military officers and statesmen.
Several cards have period handwritten identifications on the backs, including royal titles and names. Photographer and studio markings represented in the collection include examples from Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Florence, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Darmstadt, St. Petersburg and other European locations. Studios/imprints visible include Disdéri, Le Jeune, Mayer & Pierson, Fratelli Alinari, Chemar Frères, Heinrich Keller, Carl Krause and others.
An especially interesting historical group because the subjects collectively document the interconnected European royal houses and military leadership of the mid-19th century. The Prussian material is particularly notable, with multiple personalities directly associated with Prussia, the Franco-Prussian War and the formation of the German Empire.
