Original October 12, 1930, black-and-white photograph showing passengers aboard the SS American Legion dressed in bathing attire while awaiting a traditional King Neptune’s Court initiation ceremony. Such ceremonies were held for “neophytes,” or first-time travelers crossing the equator.
The handwritten caption across the image reads:
“Neophytes awaiting trial in King Neptune’s Court. SS American Legion – Oct. 12 – 1930.”
A fascinating maritime photograph documenting an old seafaring tradition aboard the SS American Legion. The photograph is completely separated into two pieces through the center and has creasing, tears, fading and other age-related wear. Both original pieces are included.
