Wonderful original Japanese ocean-liner memorabilia dating from 1930.
The principal piece is an illustrated Dinner menu from the S.S. “Shanghai Maru,” dated Monday, January 27, 1930, and identifying Commander Y. Masuzumi. The menu features beautiful period Japanese artwork depicting musicians and dancers beneath a willow tree.
The accompanying folding N.Y.K. Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) piece includes a printed world route map showing the company\'s international steamship routes and was actually mailed from Japan to Bronxville, New York, USA. It retains its original Japanese postage stamp and postal cancellation as well as handwritten period correspondence.
The handwritten message describes the writer\'s trip and makes this an especially evocative survivor from the golden age of Pacific ocean travel.
